Historic Designation

In 1998, the Buffalo Common Council granted historic designation to that portion of the Hamlin Park community, which lies between East Ferry Street to the south, and the northern boundary at Main Street-Kensington Avenue.
Hamlin Park is the largest predominately African American historic community in the nation. The designation was granted based on the community's historic architecture and its identification with numerous persons who significantly contributed to the development of Buffalo. The historic designation ensures the preservation of the community's history, culture, and architecture. It preserves the quality of life, and protects and enhances the property values in Hamlin Park. Prior to altering the exterior of any property within the historic district, property owners must obtain approval from the City's Preservation Board.
