President's AddressSeptember 12, 2000Newly elected President Shawn Cullinane thanked everyone for their support and confidence and for the privilege of serving as President. He congratulated everyone on the Executive Committee for all their past efforts on behalf of the Association. He pledged his efforts, and those of the Executive Committee, to continue working hard in the coming year on behalf of the Association membership. President Cullinane welcomed the Board's newest member, Director Kathy Ellis, and wished her good luck in her tenure on the Board. President Cullinane congratulated Immediate Past President Jim Koury on a successful tenure as President and wished him well in his future endeavors. On behalf of the membership, he presented Jim Koury with a plaque of appreciation and joined the members of the Executive Committee in presenting Jim with several gifts. President Cullinane stated that the Association was a unique organization comprised of a dynamic and diverse group of individuals from across New York State and he was proud to have the opportunity to represent them. He pledged that the Association would continue to work in partnership and cooperation with NYCOM, the State Comptrollers Office, the Finance Officers, and others to promote and support the Municipal Clerks profession. Among the priorities of the Association in the coming year will be to review and renew the educational opportunities that are available to clerks, particularly in light of the demise of the Syracuse IIMC Clerks Institute and Academy. He believed that the closing of the Syracuse Institute may in fact create the opportunity to develop new training and education programs more directly geared towards the needs of New York clerks, in order that we may become more effective and efficient municipal officials. The Education Committee will be a very important committee this year and charged with determining specific educational goals and policies to benefit our membership. At the same time, the Association will continue to promote programs like the one day training seminars sponsored by the Association and General Code Publishers. The next one is scheduled for October in Newburgh. Others will be scheduled on about a twice a year basis. President Cullinane thanked Jim Koury for his efforts in organizing the seminars. Another priority will be to improve communication outlets for the membership. This will include getting the website back on line and more accessible. The Bulletin will also continue to be an important communication tool. Other technology methods will be explored as well. President Cullinane made special mention of Lori Cashel and Corrine Mott for doing a fine job with the Registration Desk and Hospitality at this year's Fall Training School. He reminded everyone that the Association is only as good as those that get involved make it better. He encouraged everyone to become active on one of the Association committees. President Cullinane concluded by praising all clerks for the great jobs they do in their respective communities, day in and day out. He stated that they are the single most important official in any village or city and should be proud of their particular accomplishments. Committee Appointments
