Economic Development


The Department is charged with leading economic development efforts of the City of Buffalo by coordinating the activities of public, not-for profit and private agencies. 

Mayor Brown has called for the increase of shovel-ready land for immediate development, to improve the efficiency, predictability and effectiveness of City agencies that support economic development efforts, and for local agencies to work cooperatively together to grow Buffalo.

The Department coordinates efforts with a host of local, state, and federal partners to promote development in Buffalo, including:

Buffalo Niagara Enterprise (BNE) - provides comprehensive economic development assistance to new and existing companies in the eight counties of Western New York, including everything from demographic information to tax incentives to site identification.

Buffalo Niagara Partnership - mission is to organize and undertake actions to expand private sector jobs and stimulate investments in the Buffalo Niagara region.

Buffalo Urban Development Corporation (BUDC) - To create a dynamic and responsive project development process and team, capable of meeting the special needs and challenges associated with urban and high impact project development in Erie County.

Empire State Development Corporation (ESD) - mission is to provide the highest level of assistance and service to businesses in order to encourage economic investment and prosperity in New York State. We work closely with businesses to: identify creative solutions to challenging problems, generate enhanced opportunities for growth, and help them achieve their uniquely important, short- and long-term goals.

Erie County Industrial Development Agency (ECIDA) - is a public benefit corporation created in 1970 by act of the New York State Legislature to promote and assist private sector industrial / business development thereby advancing job opportunities and economic welfare to the people of Erie County, is the economic development corporation for Erie County.

Workforce Investment Board (WIB) -  The WIB is committed to creating and promoting a workforce development system that is user friendly and responsive to the needs of both the individual training/job applicant, and/or the business organization seeking our assistance. Our overall goal is to develop and sustain a unified, cost effective, labor market driven system that facilitates economic development and business growth in our community.

World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara (WTCBN) - is an international business development organization that strengthens the competitive international position of companies in Upstate New York and Niagara, Ontario. Our commitment is to provide vital trade services and to support companies through our consulting practice, educational programs, and worldwide membership affiliation.
