Buffalo City Comptroller Andrew A. SanFilippo announced today that the Comptroller’s Fraud Hotline will be put into service on Monday February 11, 2008 beginning at noon.

“The system is intended to provide a resource to identify any fraud or abuse that may be occurring in relation to City operations,” said Comptroller SanFilippo. “It is not intended to be an outlet for personal vendettas or frivolous information. This is a serious attempt to help protect taxpayers against fraud or waste.”

The Comptroller’s Fraud Hotline number is 716-851-8779, and will provide for up to five minutes per call for information. People can also go to the City website at www.city-buffalo.com/fraudhotline to provide any information on any operations that they believe may be fraudulent or wasteful.

Darryl McPherson, City Auditor, will oversee day-to-day operation of the fraud hotline and investigate any complaints that are deemed to be with merit. McPherson is a licensed attorney and sworn officer of the court and formally served as the city attorney assigned to the Common Council. Prior to joining the city’s Comptroller Office he served as the counsel to the Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority. People may also call McPherson directly at 716-851-5265 if they have information about possible fraud or abuse. The identity of all callers will remain anonymous.

Comptroller SanFilippo is hopeful that this new vehicle will add to his ability to ferret out any wasteful or fraudulent use of taxpayer dollars.
