SanFilippo Orders Audit of Towing Fees

Buffalo City Comptroller Andy SanFilippo announced today that he has ordered an immediate audit review of towing fees issued to drivers even though their vehicles may have never been towed.

“I’ve directed City Auditor Frank Belliotti to immediately commence an audit review of towing fees issued in the city over the last several months to determine any pattern in the writing of these tickets and any other potential irregularities in the ticketing of these vehicle owners,” said SanFilippo.

The comptroller added that he was disturbed by the reports in the Buffalo News on Sunday that a city police officer had been charging towing fees to hundreds of drivers even though their cars had not bee moved.

“Enforcement is one thing, potential abuse is something quite different,” said the comptroller. “I want to know what happened here and why, and hopefully by examining the records we’ll be able to determine what we’re dealing with. For example, where did the money go? I want my Audit Division to conduct a thorough review and give me some answers.”

SanFilippo said he will report his findings to the Common Council and the public as soon as they become available.
