Permits, Fees and Changes To The Permit Process - 9/1/04

As of September 1st, 2004, there are some types of work for which building permits are no longer required - although the work must still conform to the regulations of the City Charter and to the regulations of the Family of Building Codes of New York State.

In addition, fees for building permits in the City are no longer calculated by the cost of work, or in the case of new construction, no longer calculated by interior volume of the proposed structure. Building permit fees are now calculated as either a flat fee, or a work area-calculated fee with a multiplier adjustment, up or down, based upon the use/occupancy. Generally, simple projects are flat fee, and complex ones are area-calculated.

Thirdly, there are changes to City Charter codes that update, delete, 'tune up', or create some sections.

Lastly, there have been some changes to the permits procedure (and there will continue to be changes) that will help it be more efficient and dependable.

Any Comments or suggestions about the permit process may be entered in the 'Feedback' page link at the bottom, or in the suggestion box in the Permit Office.
