Cultural Destination Part of Mayor's Federal Agenda

BUFFALO—Mayor Byron W. Brown announced he is asking for $500,000 from the federal government to fund his plans for a new cultural arts center for Buffalo, to be located on Michigan Avenue in the cultural corridor.

"Buffalo possesses a rich and diverse urban cultural community," said Mayor Brown.  "What we want to do is create the Buffalo Urban Arts Center to house several of the city's smaller cultural and art groups, so that they can get the recognition they deserve."

Groups to be housed in the proposed Buffalo Urban Arts Center include the African American Cultural Center, Langston Hughes Institute, Ujima Theatre Company, Love Supreme School of Music and Buffalo Inner City Ballet.

"This funding request would help with the development of a business plan and pre-design concept for the Buffalo Urban Arts Center," Mayor Brown said.  "Locating the Arts Center on Michigan Avenue will further help the development of this important cultural corridor in Buffalo.  I know the Arts Center will be a welcomed addition to our city's cultural tourism attractions, drawing out-of-town and regional visitors."

Mayor Brown made the formal request for this federal funding during his first official visit to Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, March 28, 2006.  The Mayor, accompanied by senior staff, met privately and individually with Senators Charles Schumer and Hillary Rodham Clinton and Members of Congress Brian Higgins, Thomas Reynolds and Louise Slaughter.

"This was an excellent first trip to Washington, D.C. and I was very pleased with the reception I received from the members of our federal legislative delegation," said Mayor Brown.  "Our federal legislative agenda is focused and precise, which is important in such a competitive environment.  Besides requesting funding for the Buffalo Urban Arts Center, I am also seeking funding that will help us return cars to Main Street in downtown and access federal money to support the Fruit Belt Redevelopment Project."
