Mayor and Buffalo Schools Superintendent Launch Plan to Address Ongoing Problem

BUFFALO – Responding immediately to recent acts of violence involving Buffalo students both in and outside city public schools, Mayor Byron Brown and School Superintendent Dr. James A. Williams today announced a plan to address school violence.

Joined by Interim Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Strano, Mayor Brown and Dr. Williams outlined their plan that includes the following actions:

· Increase Buffalo police presence at city schools, including Lafayette, Grover Cleveland, Riverside and Burgard high schools, with the Flex Squad.

· Focus police presence at the opening and closing of the school day.

· Immediate creation of Opportunity Schools.

· Assign a Police Department liaison to work directly with the school district on all matters of safety and security.

· Police districts will patrol daily outside schools on a rotating basis.

· Continue recent Police Department's Intelligence Squad's "Safe Schools Partnership" collaboration with the school district in sharing resources and assistance in identifying gang-related activity.

· School district will seek to have former Attendance Intervention Model (AIM) funding restored.

"I will not tolerate any act of violence, especially in and around our public schools," stated Mayor Brown. "As Mayor, and as a parent, I will do everything I can to ensure the safety and security for the vast majority of our public school students who want to go to school and receive a quality education. Working with Dr. Williams and our Police Department, I intend for this plan to have an immediate impact on this unacceptable behavior."

"I thank Mayor Brown and the Police Department for their immediate response to this critically important issue," said Dr. Williams. "This is an example of our ongoing collaborative approach to improve the quality of education and the quality of life in the City of Buffalo. "
