Culter Director of Communications 716-851-4841 Buffalo’s Favorite Polish Dish Part of National Brand Contest BUFFALO –Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced the winning contestants from the City of Buffalo’s first-ever “Pierogi Pride” event, which was held on Friday, August 25th in Niagara Square. The contest was part of the city’s overall effort to be designated Capital of the Pierogy Pocket by Mrs. T’s, the national food brand based in Shenandoah, PA. “Our city’s Pierogi Pride celebration was a great success in large part because of the participants in our pierogi contest, which brought out the best in Buffalo’s pierogi- making restaurants and other purveyors,” said Mayor Brown. “Our rich Polish and Eastern European heritage is a source of great pride throughout Buffalo and Western New York and this event highlighted the fact that above all else, the City of Buffalo should be the unquestioned Capital of the Pierogy Pocket.” The winning pierogi participants are: Category Cheese/Potato 1st Potts Deli & Grill Runner Up The Bear's Den Sauerkraut 1st Nowinski Pierogies Runner Up Ray's Lounge & Catering, Inc. Other 1st K Sisters, Inc. (Prune) Mayor Brown presented all of the winning participants with Certificates of Appreciation. The competition featured celebrity judges, including Buffalo Common Council President David Franczyk, Buffalo Common Councilmember Joe Golombek, Buffalo Corporation Counsel Alisa Lukasiewicz, M & T Bank Vice President Dave Rutecki, Channel 7 News meteorologist Aaron Mentkowski, Channel 4 News anchor Don Postles and Buffalo News journalist Jane Kwiatkowski. Mrs. T.’s, based in Shenandoah, PA is sponsoring the contest to promote “Pierogy Power,” and to determine which city can generate the greatest enthusiasm for the food delicacy. Participating cities must submit to Mrs. T’s by September 4, 2006 creative ways for demonstrating the community’s enthusiasm for pierogi, providing supporting materials (e.g., videos, special event materials, petitions, press releases, news articles, official proclamations) that will be judged by the company. In addition, Mrs. T.’s will provide an online voting opportunity at www.pierogypocket.com for citizens to log their support of their city’s effort.
