Brown today announced, in collaboration with the Buffalo Fire Department and the Division for Senior Services, the launch of a File of Life Project to benefit senior citizens in the City of Buffalo. “By implementing this project in Buffalo, we are potentially saving lives,” said Mayor Brown. “The File of Life Project is based around the importance of immediate care in an emergency situation. By providing personal and health-related information on their File of Life cards, senior citizens are making it much easier for firefighters, police officers, paramedics and other emergency responders to help them in emergency situations, when time is of the upmost importance.” Since being created in 1995, the File of Life Project has seen national success with implementation in 49 states. Over 1,600 communities nationwide have adopted the program, benefiting senior citizens in over 2,500,000 homes. The File of Life Project assists emergency responders with their search for patient-related information in three ways. First, a door decal is provided to the senior citizen as a way to immediately alert responders of their participation in File of Life; second, a magnetic refrigerator card and case is provided for at-home emergencies; and third, a wallet-sized card case is provided to the senior citizen in the event of a medical emergency away from home. The Division for Senior Services and the city’s Youth Department will be available at selected senior centers, housing complexes and churches throughout Buffalo to assist seniors in filling out their File of Life Cards. If any additional assistance or information is needed, please contact the Division for Senior Services at 851-4141. |
