Mayor Brown Releases Recommended 2010-2011 Capital Budget

$22.4 Million Plan Contains Wide Variety of Capital Improvement Projects Including $5.1 Million for Citywide Infrastructure Improvements; $2.89 Million City and Olmsted Parks and Over $2.8 Million in Public Safety Upgrades

Mayor Byron W. Brown today released his $22.4 million 2011 recommended capital budget, which will be submitted to the Common Council for its consideration. Mandated by the City Charter to be submitted by the Mayor on or before November 1st, the Common Council has until December 15th to adopt the recommended capital budget.

In the transmission of the capital budget to the Common Council, Mayor Brown stated, “In recommending individual expenditures, my administration has thoroughly reviewed the recommendations of the Citizens Planning Council (CPC).  My administration is greatly appreciative of the difficult task performed by the CPC in evaluating more than $78 million in requests.  As evidenced by the attached budget, I have adhered closely to the recommendations of the CPC.”

The level of spending for the capital budget is set annually by the City Comptroller, which, this year, set the cap at $22.4 million. The capital budget was $22.7 in 2010, $21.5 million in 2009, $22 million in 2008 and $23 million in 2007.

“My recommended Capital Budget contains a wide variety of capital improvement projects with more than $2.89 million in funding for city parks including the Olmsted Parks and historic Broderick Park,” said Mayor Brown.  “This funding is necessary given the County of Erie’s decision to return management of the parks to the City of Buffalo.” 

Other highlights of Mayor Brown’s 2011 Recommended Capital Budget include:

  • Citywide Infrastructure – Repair/Replacement  $5,146,561
  • Buffalo Public Schools     $4,900,000
  • Emergency Demolitions     $2,686,022
  • City-wide Tree Removal & Planting   $1,605,000
  • Buffalo Fire Department Fire Apparatus   $1,465,900
  • Buffalo Police Department Prisoner Lock-up  $1,405,000
  • Cultural Institutions     $1,235,420
  • City-wide Community Centers     $561,750
  • Building Needs Assessment    $535,000
  • Broadway Market      $347,750
  • Downtown Ball Park (Coca-Cola Field) Improvements $188,320
