Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson today requested a leave of absence immediately under the guidelines of the federal Family Medical Leave Act and I have granted Commissioner Gipson his leave of absence.
 
I am saddened to hear that Commissioner Gipson has been diagnosed with prostate cancer and I offer him and his family my complete support and prayers for his swift and complete recovery.
 
During Commissioner Gipson’s leave of absence, First Deputy Commissioner Byron Lockwood will assume the management duties of the Buffalo Police Department and Deputy Commissioner Daniel Derenda will handle all external communications for the Department.
