Buffalo firefighter Mark Reed released from ECMC following accident during fire

BUFFALO—Mayor Byron W. Brown and Buffalo Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo joined family, friends, and Buffalo firefighters in welcoming Buffalo firefighter Mark Reed as he was released this week from Erie County Medical Center.

Reed was in the hospital following an accident almost two months ago, in which a brick chimney fell on him as he fought an arson fire in a vacant house at 120 Wende St. His injuries

included a punctured lung, seven broken ribs, facial and skull fractures, and an injured right leg that was amputated 9 days after the June 10th fire, due to infection.

“Firefighter Reed has shown extreme bravery and courage in the face of such challenging circumstances,” said Mayor Brown. “He has made a truly miraculous recovery, and is the epitome of the dedication and strength that is characteristic of our Buffalo firefighters.”

Reed lost 32 units of blood after his injury, many of which came from his brain. Despite this, he is expected to regain full cognitive function and is improving daily.Reed was also fitted with a prosthetic leg and will need to undergo extensive physical therapy, although he hopes to return to a job at the Buffalo Fire Department as soon as possible.

“Mark Reed has always been an exemplary firefighter and his struggle for a quick recovery after such devastating injuries is certainly amazing, but it is also something we should have expected out of such a brave and dedicated man,” said Commissioner Lombardo. “We look forward to welcoming Firefighter Reed back to the Buffalo Fire Department as soon as he is well enough to return.”
