Grant Will Help With Ongoing Lead Abatement Efforts

BUFFALO—Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced that the City of Buffalo Office of Strategic Planning is the recipient of a new grant award under HUD's Lead Based Paint Demonstration Program. The grant is approximately $1.1 million and is based on an application submitted by OSP.

“The City of Buffalo has been working hard on lead abatement throughout our older neighborhoods,” said Mayor Brown. “Through outreach and educational programs, parents are becoming more aware of the dangers of lead paint and are taking the important steps to take care of the issue. This grant will help continue these efforts.”

The award, from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, will provide 90 owner-occupants in the City of Buffalo with rehabilitation of their homes to reduce lead based paint hazards. Each qualified applicant will receive up to $25,000 housing rehabilitation and $10,000 in interim lead control assistance. In addition, the City will work with faith-based and community-based organizations to proved education and outreach concerning the effects of lead paint on children, advising the public of the potential damage to children’s health and development.  More information on Buffalo’s lead free efforts can be found at www.buffaloleadfree.org.

"Thanks to the support and effort of the members of Buffalo's federal legislative delegation, this important grant will help the City of Buffalo continue to assist homeowners and community organizations remove lead-based paint from their homes and distribute safety information on the effects of lead-based paint," said Mayor Brown.
