Mayor Byron Brown and Mayor Ivan Sakharchuk will sign Agreement

BUFFALO, N.Y., May 25, 2007 – City of Buffalo Mayor W. Byron Brown today signed an agreement recognizing Horlivka, Ukraine as a sister city. The relationship is expected to develop closer ties between Eastern Europe’s emerging markets and those Buffalo-Niagara region companies with products and services to meet their needs.

“Sister City relationships have the ability to foster important business and cultural exchanges between areas of the world that might not otherwise have this opportunity,” said Mayor Brown. “In signing this agreement, we are excited with the prospect of the mutual benefits for the emerging city of Horlivka and the City of Buffalo.”

Discussions on fostering closer ties between the two cities occurred at a recent meeting and presentation by the Ukrainian Ambassador to the United States, Dr. Oleh Shamshur. The meeting was hosted by the Ukrainian Federal Credit Union, and included attendance by a number of Ukrainian Embassy and Consulate officials from Washington D.C. and New York City.

“We are delighted that a relationship has developed between Buffalo and Horlivka, and feel that together we can strengthen international business and community relationships,” said Ukrainian Federal Credit Union CEO Tamara Denysenko. “We are confident that this relationship will also serve as a model for, and ultimately benefit, a number of other East European countries.” The credit union is headquartered in Rochester, N.Y.

In development for more than a year, the sister city relationship has already cultivated Horlivka’s consideration of products and services from Buffalo-area companies that can address a number of the growing city’s needs.

World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara has been involved in facilitating the relationship with Holivka Sister City relationship.  “The Ukraine and other Eastern European countries are important markets for many Buffalo companies as exports to these markets continue to attract new attention each year as the markets become more stable, transparent and are yearning for U.S. investment,” said Holly Sinnott, President & CEO, World Trade Center Buffalo Niagara.

A copy of the signed agreement will be hand-carried to the Mayor of Horlivka, Oblast Donetsk, Ukraine in the coming weeks.
