Last year’s success paves way for another outstanding family event

BUFFALO – The 17th annual Gus Macker 3-on-3 Charity Basketball Tournament, building on last year’s improvements to the annual event, will return to downtown Buffalo on Saturday and Sunday, June 23rd and 24th.

Hosted again this year by the Police Athletic League of Buffalo (PAL) and Kids Escaping Drugs (KEDS), the tournament will feature qualified referees at each court, experienced scorekeepers for each game, and family oriented activities throughout the weekend.

"The annual Gus Macker tournament is one of our city's great outdoor events that brings people of all ages and backgrounds into the heart of downtown Buffalo," said Mayor Brown.  "This is a truly family-friendly event for players and spectators alike.  Thanks to all of the partners that help make Gus Macker possible, especially the Police Athletic League of Buffalo and the Kids Escaping Drugs campaign.  I look forward to seeing the thousands of people from across our region that will come downtown for this great weekend event."

Last year over 4,000 players on 920 teams filled 70 basketball courts along Delaware Avenue from Niagara Square to Chippewa Street. Over 1,000 action-packed games were played each day, with finals in each age division decided late Sunday afternoon at main courts set up in front of Buffalo’s City Hall.

Gus Macker organizers expect similar success this year, as teams continue to register online at www.buffalogusmacker.com  A $128 team registration fee is required, and more information is available at the web-site address.

In addition to the spirited competition on the courts, special event contests and children’s activities will be conducted throughout the weekend and concession stands will be set up along Delaware Avenue.

All of Western New York is invited to attend the Gus Macker Weekend activities, cheering on their favorite athletes while supporting the important missions of the Police Athletic League and Kids Escaping Drugs.

Presented by Toyota, the Tournament sponsors include: New Era, Wegmans, Dicks Sporting Goods, The Buffalo News, WGRZ-TV, 97-Rock, Buffalo Place, Sahlen’s, City of Buffalo, Buffalo Police Department, Dunkin’ Donuts, Enlyten Sport Strips, AdPro Team Sports, Hart Hotels, Inc., Holiday Inn, Rural/Metro Medical Services, POWERade, Wendy’s, Turkey Hill, Keller Bros.& Miller, Inc., Dasani and the Catholic Health System.
