May 2007 > MAYOR BROWN PLACES FRIENDLY WAGER ON SABRES/SENATORS SERIES MAYOR BROWN PLACES FRIENDLY WAGER ON SABRES/SENATORS SERIESSource/ContactOffice of the Mayor Peter K. Cutler Director of Communications 716-851-4841 Puts Traditional Buffalo “Beef on Weck,” Flying Bison Beer and City First Responder Baseball Caps Up Against Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien’s Offer BUFFALO – Mayor Byron Brown today announced a “friendly” wager with his Ottawa, Ontario counterpart Mayor Larry O’Brien for the upcoming National Hockey League Eastern Conference final series between the Buffalo Sabres and the Ottawa Senators. “The Sabres have proved they are among the elite teams in the National Hockey League and they will carry the pride and strong support of Buffalo and Western New York into the Eastern Conference finals with the Ottawa Senators,” said Mayor Brown. “This is one President’s Cup-winning team – the NHL’s best regular season team – that will not fall short in the playoffs. I am confident the Sabres’ talent and team speed will carry them through to victory over the Senators.” Mayor Brown placed one of the city’s famed delicacies – Beef on Weck (supplied by renowned local restaurateur Charlie “The Butcher” Roesch) – in his wager with Mayor O’Brien. Charlie the Butcher is widely regarded as Western New York’s Goodwill Ambassador for the region’s unique cuisine and has been regularly featured on national television broadcasts (he is also the grandson of Charles E. Roesch who started the family butcher business in 1914 and was Mayor of Buffalo from 1930 to 1934). Since both Mayors are the 58th Mayors of their respective cities, Mayor Brown will put up 58 Beef on Weck sandwiches, which are being donated by Charlie the Butcher, and two cases of locally brewed Flying Bison beer (one case of Buffalo Lager and one case of Aviator Red), which will be brewed over the next week during the series and donated by the Buffalo-based company. Flying Bison’s company tagline is: Real Beer Brewed in Buffalo. In addition, both Mayors, in tribute to their city’s police and fire departments, will put up 58 baseball caps that contain their police department’s and fire department’s logos. Buffalo’s hats are being produced and donated by First Impressions Apparel. The losing Mayor will donate the hats to the winning Mayor’s police and fire departments. Mayor Brown stated, “Like last year, this will be a great series between two very talented hockey teams, but we all know the heart and desire of the Buffalo Sabres will again defeat the Senators as they continue on their quest to lift Lord Stanley’s Cup – Go Sabres!” |
