Also announce promotion of seven Buffalo Police Department personnel

Fulfilling his pledge to begin adding police officers to the Buffalo Police Department, Mayor Brown today announced, along with Buffalo Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson, that 14 new police officers would be added immediately to the Department.  The Mayor and Commissioner Gipson also announced the promotion of 7 Buffalo Police Department personnel.

“I am committed to strengthening the personnel of the Buffalo Police Department by adding new police officers and acquiring the best and most up-to-date technology available,” said Mayor Brown. “It is a priority of my Administration to ensure our residents have the best law enforcement service possible and that all law abiding Buffalo residents and business owners enjoy a good quality of life.”

The Mayor and Commissioner Gipson welcomed 12 former Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority (BMHA) police officers who took the recent police exam in the spring of 2007. They are all certified NYS Police Officers and they will take a three-week refresher course and then officially join the Department as police officers.

The former BMHA police officers were joined by 2 Police Department report technicians who were promoted to police officers who also passed the following passing the police exam. They will do internal assignments at Police Headquarters until January 2008 and then will begin their six-month training academy. They are scheduled to hit the streets in the summer of 2008.

“I believe we have the finest, most dedicated police officers in the nation,” said Commissioner Gipson. “The Mayor and I recognize that the men and women of our Police Department have done a tremendous job serving the residents of Buffalo, but we also know that the Department needs to grow and I am very pleased to bring on the first new police officers to the Department since 2001.”

Under the Mayor’s plan to rebuild the ranks of the Police Department, two new police classes, comprised of 45 cadets each, will take place in the coming year, which will meet and exceed (including the new 14 police officers) the Mayor’s plan to add 100 new police officers to the department in 2008.

“To date this year, there has been a 39% drop in homicides versus the same period in 2006,” said Mayor Brown. “Further, all four categories of violent crime – Murder, Rape, Robbery & Assault – are down leading to an overall 13% reduction of violent crimes through October 2007 vs. October 2006.  I attribute this to the excellent work and dedication of the men and women of the Buffalo Police Department.”

In addition to new police officers, the Brown Administration will install 60 new state-of-the-art video surveillance cameras throughout the City by this coming February.

Mayor Brown and Commissioner Gipson also announced the promotion of 7 Buffalo Police Department personnel, including: Lieutenant Brian Strobele to Chief, Lieutenant James Shea to Captain, PO George Morlock to Lieutenant, and Police Officers Patricia Wrest, Christopher Sterlace, Marlin Hall and Deborah Buyers to Detective.

“These are all excellent representatives of the Buffalo Police Department and I wish them continued success as they serve the City of Buffalo,” said Commissioner Gipson.

The 14 new Buffalo Police Officers are: Dennis R. Gilbert, Thomas G. Zak, Daniel B. Kurdziel, Judith M. Walker, Craig J. Leone, Adam E. Oshei, Amy J. Frankel, Ann W. Devaney, Richard P. Manley, Brian J. Britzzalaro, Robert E. Eloff, Sherry A. Ebert, Bart A. Adams, and Thomas P. Feeney.
