BUFFALO- Mayor Byron W. Brown, along with Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson, praised the dedication and tireless work of the Buffalo Police Department’s Homicide Squad for the quick arrest of a suspect following the September 7th murder of Alan Stepney and Devonte Murray on Buffalo’s East Side.  The suspected gunman, Calvin McCoy, was arrested on the evening of Wednesday, September 12th.

Earlier this week, on Tuesday, September 11th, Mayor Brown and Commissioner Gipson launched a new Buffalo Police Department initiative entitled Working Against Violent Events (WAVE). The goal of the initiative is to provide a quick response to areas experiencing violent crimes, including homicide, by working with local residents to solve crimes.  The creation of this program is an outgrowth of the very successful Save Our Streets program.

Mayor Brown, Commissioner Gipson, community- and faith-based leaders went door-to-door on the city’s East and West Sides, in the vicinity of

recent homicides in each area, distributing informational flyers to residents that helps them supply tip information to the Buffalo Police Department confidentially and anonymously.  The Police Departments confidential tip line number is: 847-2255.

“As Mayor of this City, it is my main concern to improve the overall quality of life for all Buffalo residents,” said Mayor Brown.  “Developing programs such as WAVE is another tactic we will utilize to reduce and ultimately remove crime from our streets, By getting out into the streets and recognizing what needs to be done to continue lowering our crime rate, we are essentially providing yet another method of support to our law abiding citizens.”

Crime rates in the City of Buffalo continue to decrease; through August 2007 the homicide rate is 42% less than that from the same time period in 2006.  In an effort to continue the continuing decrease in crime, Mayor Brown and the Buffalo Police Department work hand-in-hand to develop and implement programs such as WAVE, which will help citizens of Buffalo and combat crime.

“We're excited about the WAVE initiative,” said Police Commissioner Gipson. “We believe the citizens of this great community are starting to come forward to help us solve violent crimes in the city and help get these criminals off the streets. We're seeing signs that the so-called ‘Code of Silence’ is becoming a thing of the past.  And we believe this new endeavor will only help in that regard.”

The WAVE program is being modeled after the very successful Save Our Streets Task Force “Clean Sweep” program.  In 2006, the City conducted 15 Clean Sweeps, and because of the success of the sweeps, 18 will be conducted this year.
