May 2008 > Mayor Brown Breaks Ground On New Firehouse Mayor Brown Breaks Ground On New FirehouseSource/Contact Bailey/Genesee Facility Will House Engine 31, Ladder 14 Mayor Byron W. Brown today joined Buffalo Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo and other members of the Buffalo Fire Department for the official groundbreaking of a new firehouse in the city’s Lovejoy neighborhood. The new fire station, which will house Engine 31,Ladder 14, is being built on one acre lot, on a previously public school site with total costs of $4.2 M. The proposed station is a 15,000 sq. ft., state of the art building facility that will replace the outdated turn-of-the-century facility across Bailey Avenue. The site will allow parking for 24 vehicles and provide a diesel filling station with a drive through bay for fire apparatus. “Public safety is a top priority of my Administration and providing our firefighting personnel with modern, state-of-the-art facilities like this new firehouse will enhance their capability to respond to any call for service,” said Mayor Brown. The building steps up in height along Bailey Ave to ease the transition from the adjacent residences. "Today the Buffalo Fire Department continues its ongoing modernization and revitalization with this new fire station,” said Commissioner Lombardo. “This modernization and revitalization effort enhances the safety of our residents and our firefighters." The Buffalo Fire Department (BFD), with 725 active employees, is a fully professional career force. The BFD is a full service department providing fire suppression, hazardous materials response, technical rescue, emergency medical response, as well as prevention and inspection services, and arson investigation.
