Firefighters Contract

PUBLIC STATEMENT
MAYOR BYRON W. BROWN
JANUARY 31, 2007

Today’s approval by the Buffalo Fiscal Stability Authority of the tentative agreement between the City of Buffalo and the Buffalo Professional Firefighters Association, I.A.F.F., Local 282 clears the way for final ratification of this contract by the rank and file members of the firefighters’ union.

Following agreement on the contract between the Buffalo Professional Firefighters Association leadership and my Administration, the Buffalo Common Council yesterday added their support with an overwhelming majority vote.

The path is now clear for the City of Buffalo’s bravest – the Buffalo firefighters – to ratify this historic document.

For too long the Buffalo firefighters have served the residents of our city, placing themselves in harm’s way, while having to live with the wage freeze. This contract ends that situation, providing the firefighters with an immediate $5,000 added to their base salary, along with a 3.4% raise. Beginning July 1, 2007, the firefighters will receive a 3.4% increase to their annual salaries, which will be repeated annually through the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

As with any contract negotiation, each side made concessions, which facilitated an agreement that benefits firefighters and the taxpayers of Buffalo.

From the time that I announced my decision to seek the Office of Mayor, I stated that lifting the wage freeze imposed on our hard-working city employees was a priority. With this proposed contract agreement, I have fulfilled that commitment.

I am confident that the City of Buffalo is making great progress toward a more stable and prosperous financial future. The approval of this contract by the Buffalo firefighters will highlight that fact and demonstrate that the city’s best days are before us.
