Guilty Plea in Police Shootings

Public Statement
Mayor Byron W. Brown &
Police Commissioner H. McCarthy Gipson
September 17, 2007

We believe the Varner Harris guilty plea deal is definitely a significant outcome. We're pleased that Harris will face a lengthy prison term.

While we were confident the evidence against Harris was overwhelming, the plea deal now means Harris faces a prison term of 30 years to life, which will be confirmed when he is sentenced in November.

We also want to thank the residents of the Western New York community for their continued support of both Buffalo Police Officers Patty Parete and Carl Andolina, who Harris has admitted shooting on December 5, 2006. Both officers are extremely grateful for the support they have received from throughout our community.
