Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Brings New Fire House Online

Mayor Byron W. Brown today participated in a ribbon cutting ceremony at the city’s newest firehouse, formally opening the 15,000 square foot Bailey/Genesee facility, which was constructed at a cost of approximately $4 million.

The new facility will house Engine 31 and Ladder 14 and be home to eight on-duty firefighters.

The fourth of six planned new or rehabilitated firehouses, the new facility replaces a 100+year old firehouse located across the street on the corners of Bailey and Doat.

“With these modern fire fighting facilities, our goal is to provide our brave fire fighters with the most up-to-date and modern infrastructure available,” said Mayor Brown.  “Whether preparing for their duties through training, reviewing their responses to calls for service or rehabilitating from their fearless response to calls, the fire fighters of Engine 31 and Ladder 14 can now work from a facility that will better meet their day-to-day needs.”

Designed by Chaintreuil Jensen & Stark Architects,LLP, the Bailey/Genesee Fire House contains three truck bays that can be expanded, if necessary, to four truck bays.

“It is critically important for our fire fighters to have the best possible equipment, whether it’s buildings or fire fighting apparatus,” said Fire Commissioner Michael Lombardo.  “These are challenging times for Buffalo’s bravest, who daily put their lives on the line for the residents of our city.  With less personnel and consolidated services, the men and women of our Fire Department remain committed to the professional standards of our department and new facilities, such as this new fire house, will enhance our department’s operations.”

“The completion of this important facility is a testament to the type of cooperation, collaboration and commitment my administration has sought with all of our departments,” said Mayor Brown.  “I look forward to continuing to working with all of our departments in ways that will add to the service we provide our citizens and will announce the groundbreaking for our fifth new facility in the near future.”

Contractors participating in the construction of the new firehouse were:
                        General - Rodems Construction
Plumbing & Fire Protection – Mollenburg & Betz
                        HVAC – J.W Danforth
                        Electric - Goodwin Electric
The Buffalo Fire Department is comprised of 19 engine companies, 9 ladder companies and 1 rescue company.
