Shotspotter Initiative Enhances BPD Anti-Crime Efforts

The City of Buffalo announces its partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and ShotSpotter Inc., the market leader in wide-area acoustic surveillance and gunshot location and detection technology, to provide the ShotSpotter® Gunshot Location Service (GLS) to the city.

The ShotSpotter GLS delivers real-time and immediate gunshot location data, enabling accurate decisions for emergency response, helping improve situational intelligence and elevating first responder safety. The ShotSpotter gunfire alert data also helps improve incident response and management and provides additional forensic evidence for investigations and analysis.

“The safety and security of our residents is a top priority,” said City of Buffalo Mayor Byron W. Brown. “We thank the FBI for playing such a key role and I believe this system will only add to our crime fighting and crime prevention measures as we continue to reduce overall crime in the City of Buffalo”.

“Helping minimize gun violence within our community is a top concern for our department and the City of Buffalo,” said Buffalo Police Commissioner Daniel Derenda. “This technology and the assistance of the FBI will help us detect and track gunfire as it happens, allowing us to respond faster to gunfire incidents, improve our presence within the community, and add actionable information to our existing community policing efforts.”

“The FBI is pleased to be working with ShotSpotter to help make a positive impact in the City of Buffalo in ultimately helping reduce illegal gun use and gunfire,” said Buffalo FBI Acting Special Agent in Charge Richard Kollmar.

ShotSpotter CEO & President Ralph Clark said, “We’re excited to support the City of Buffalo and partner with the FBI on this important public safety initiative. We are very impressed with the City of Buffalo’s political and public safety leadership in tackling the issue of gun and gang violence, and we’re proud to be supporting the City and the FBI in delivering a solution.”

Located in Western New York, the City of Buffalo covers over 52 square miles and has a population of more than 260,000 residents.
