Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced that the 2011 Buffalo Gus Macker 3-on-3 Charity Basketball Tournament will be held in downtown Buffalo on Saturday and Sunday, June 25th and 26th.
“Each year the Gus Macker offers spirited competition for thousands of basketball players and great activities for their families,” said Mayor Brown. “This is one of our best outdoor events in the summer, and for the past three years the largest Gus Macker in the nation. Each year I am pleased to welcome Buffalo and Western New York residents to participate in this fun and exciting tournament in the heart of downtown.”
The Police Athletic League of Buffalo will host the Buffalo Gus Macker, sponsored again this year by Terrence McGee of the Buffalo Bills and Toyota.
Last year almost 4,000 players on 950 teams filled 70 basketball courts. Thousands of action-packed games are played over the course of the weekend. Finals for each age division will again be determined by Sunday afternoon at the main courts, in front of Buffalo’s City Hall and the New Era Flagship Store on Delaware Avenue.
Gus Macker organizers expect another successful tournament this year. Teams can register online at www.macker.com. A $144 team registration fee is required. Online registration closes at midnight on Tuesday, June 6th.
Family-oriented activities, children’s events and special contests will be offered throughout the weekend. Concession stands will be set up along Delaware Avenue.
The tournament will feature qualified referees and experienced scorekeepers for each game. Courts will be set up along Delaware Avenue, from Niagara Square to Chippewa Street, with additional courts located on side streets in the area.
