City invested $469,000 in the newly completed project, with an overall investment of over $1.4 million in upgrades and enhancements at the Marina since 2006

BUFFALO– Waterfront enthusiasts now have a new way to enjoy the downtown Buffalo shoreline.  Today, Mayor Byron W. Brown officially opened the new $469,000 Observation Boardwalk at Erie Basin Marina.

“Making our waterfront more accessible to all people is something citizens have been asking for,” said Mayor Brown.  “The Boardwalk offers a new and impressive view of Erie Basin Marina and Lake Erie and complements the many other attractions that have made the Marina one of Buffalo’s favorite destinations.”

The new Boardwalk structure is galvanized steel, with a decorative stamped concrete surface.  It was built to withstand tough Buffalo winters.  In terms of size, it is 8’ wide, 182’ in length with a 25’ diameter deck at the lake end. There are stairs to access the boardwalk near the beach entrance and a handicap ramp at the deck entrance so everyone can enjoy the view.

This year, the city spent nearly a half million dollars on improvements, including new handicap accessible restrooms, and new security gates for boaters.  In a few months, an additional $400,000 will be allocated for enhancements to the Hatch Restaurant & Ice Cream Gazebo, as well as the resurfacing of the docks.

Since 2006, Mayor Brown’s Administration has invested more than $1.4 million in the Erie Basin Marina, as well as additional investments that involve public safety.  Other recent investments include:  construction of the beach at the Marina, sidewalk paving and picnic tables, new lighting and enhanced security.
