Mayor Brown and Fire Commissioner Whitfield Announce Firefighter Recruitment Initiative

Recruitment Campaign Aims to Attract Minorities and Women

August 16, 2013 - Mayor Byron Brown and Fire Commissioner Garnell Whitfield today announced a new outreach recruitment campaign aimed at encouraging veterans, minorities and women to join the ranks of the Buffalo Fire Department. The next Firefighter Civil Service Exam will be administered on November 19, 2013. Potential candidates must fill out an initial application by October 19, 2013.  

The theme of the recruitment campaign is "Ordinary People trained to do Extraordinary Things” and features active Buffalo Firefighters in print ads and public service announcements.

"As we continue to invest in the Fire Department, we are committed to filling its ranks with qualified men and women who represent our city's different communities," Mayor Brown said. "The BFD offers challenging and fulfilling career opportunities, and we encourage all eligible Buffalo residents to apply to take the test and become one of the ordinary people trained to do extraordinary things as a Buffalo Firefighter.”

"This recruitment campaign is critical to ensuring that the Fire Department's ranks reflect the communities they serve," said Commissioner Whitfield. "We are confident that this outreach campaign will spur great interest and encourage the many diverse groups that make up our City to apply for the upcoming firefighter exam."
As part of the new recruitment strategy, the BFD will conduct an outreach campaign, placing posters on bus shelters and in local publications that target ethnically diverse areas. A special emphasis will be placed on connecting with church pastors, youth groups, community service organizations and area colleges.  Buffalo Fire Department Recruiters will also distribute flyers and attend a variety of community block club meetings and outdoor events in an effort to strike up interest in the upcoming fire exam.  The Fire Department will also provide a link to its website and Facebook Page, where potential candidates can download the application and obtain information about the exam.

To be eligible, the right candidate:

  • Must be 19 years old as of 7/19/2013 and 20 years old at the time of appointment
  • Must be a full-time resident of the City of Buffalo as of 7/19/2013 and on-going
  • Willing and able to perform physically demanding work
  • Manages stress and adverse outcomes well
