‘Mayors for Meals’ Day raised awareness about senior hunger; Mayor Brown encouraged city residents to become ‘Meal on Wheels’ volunteers

March 20, 2013 -  Mayor Byron Brown and dozens of Meal on Wheels Volunteers gathered at the George K. Arthur Building on Genesee Street today to raise awareness about senior hunger in the City of Buffalo.  As part of the annual “Mayors for Meals” Day, sponsored by the Meals on Wheels Association of America, Mayor Brown also delivered meals to homebound seniors and disabled individuals on the city’s East Side.

“Today is much more than an opportunity to deliver a hot meal to senior citizens in our community who are unable to leave their home,” said Mayor Brown.  “It’s a good chance for me and other volunteers to stop by, say hello, and check in on those who may not be able to see people every day.  I applaud the important work of the Meals on Wheels Association for Western New York for bringing people together to meet the needs of those who need a meal and a friend.”

In 2012, the Meals on Wheels Association for Western New York delivered over 901,000 to homebound seniors in Erie County, 450,000 of these meals were delivered to homebound senior citizens in the city of Buffalo.

“Mayors for Meals” is a national awareness program that encourages elected officials to volunteer on this designated day to inspire community members to take a stand against senior hunger.

“Mayors for Meals is always an exciting event, with a wide array of different officials able to participate each year,” Tara A. Ellis, CEO and President, said.  “It’s a great chance for our representatives to show the support of the work Meals on Wheels does while also meeting many of their constituents – our clients and volunteers.”
