$1 Million Improvement Project At The Buffalo History Museum

City’s $932,925 investment will further enhance the museum’s atmosphere, providing a fresh state-of-the-art appearance for visitors

July 24, 2014 – Continuing his commitment to Buffalo’s arts and cultural community, Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced the city’s latest investment at The Buffalo History Museum.  Nearly $1 million in improvements are expected to begin by the end of the month.

“Building on the great momentum that’s underway in Buffalo means investing in things that grow our community, benefit our economy and advance our city as a whole,” said Mayor Brown.  “Crucial investments, like The Buffalo History Museum, promote our city’s economic vitality and are among the best ways we can use the resources entrusted to us by city taxpayers.  The Buffalo History Museum is a unique gem that builds an even stronger Buffalo.”

The city’s $932,925 investment includes: the replacement of the existing exterior and interior lighting fixtures, lighting controls, and electrical panel boards.  It will also include a new public address system and upgrades to the fire alarm system, telephone system, and surveillance camera system. Over the past four years, the city has spent $206,548 on improvements to the History Museum.

“The City of Buffalo’s partnership in caring for our largest artifact – the 1901 Pan-Am Building – continues. These significant electrical updates advance our efforts to better serve our visitors.” stated, Executive Director Melissa Brown.  “We are extremely grateful to Mayor Brown and the City of Buffalo for understanding and supporting the Museum – a vital and iconic WNY community center.”

The improvements focus on increasing the energy efficiency of the building while providing better aesthetics, security, and safety to the Museum’s visitors.  The updates are intended to complement the Museum’s strategic plan to increase attendance within the education programs and increase community usage by 35%.  The museum welcomes nearly 45,000 visitors each year. 

The Buffalo History Museum

Since its founding in 1862, The Buffalo History Museum has been Western New York’s premier historical organization, serving to collect, research, interpret, and share the Niagara Frontier’s rich history. Its collections include more than 100,000 artifacts, 200,000 photographs, and 20,000 books. The History Museum annually presents a wide array of programs, exhibits, tours, outdoor events, and activities for all ages that utilize many of these resources to tell the stories of both ordinary and extraordinary people of Western New York. 

The Buffalo History Museum is a private not-for-profit organization tax exempt under Sec. 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. It receives operating support from the County of Erie, the City of Buffalo, the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA, a state agency), and from members and friends. The Buffalo History Museum is accredited by the American Association of Museums.
