ECHDC Supports The Buffalo Opportunity Pledge

Mayor Brown thanks fellow ECHDC board members for joining individuals and organizations across Buffalo in signing the pledge

December 14, 2015 – The board of the Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation today joined the growing list of organizations and individuals signing the City of Buffalo’s Opportunity Pledge, demonstrating the organization’s support of the Pledge’s tenets: building a culture of inclusiveness and equity in Buffalo.

“The success of Canalside has created exactly what everyone in Buffalo has desired for many years – a destination for citizens and visitors to enjoy one of our city’s greatest assets, our waterfront,” said Mayor Byron Brown. “And as we build on the momentum of the exciting developments that have taken place throughout the Canalside district, as well as on the Outer Harbor, we are confident that the developments and opportunities will benefit our entire community. I thank my fellow Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation board members for joining so many other organizations and individuals in advancing this important effort that builds on the tremendous economic revitalization that is occurring across the city and is now providing new employment opportunities for our city residents.”

“I applaud Mayor Brown for developing and shepherding the Opportunity Pledge, which rightly promotes economic opportunity for all city residents and seeks to build off of the great progress and excitement that has taken place and continues to grow in Buffalo,” said Robert Gioia, Chair, Erie Canal Harbor Development Corporation. “The ECHDC is proud to join Mayor Brown and so many others in establishing an environment in our city where the rising tide truly lifts all boats. It’s a new era in our city and the revival and improvement of our economy can and should extend to every citizen.”

The City of Buffalo Opportunity pledge encourages businesses, organizations and residents to commit to building a culture of inclusiveness and equity in Buffalo. To date, nearly 3,894 individuals, 166 businesses/organizations have signed the pledge, representing over 50,470 members, students and employees.

The pledge initiative continues Mayor Brown’s efforts to break down barriers for minorities and women. Under his leadership, the city has hired the most diverse workforce in the city’s history and also continues to incorporate community benefits into many of the city’s largest economic development projects.
