Bike To Work Day

Mayor Brown Announces Upcoming Projects Highlighting Better Bicycling in Buffalo on Bike to Work Day

May 15, 2015 – On Friday, May 15th at 9:o0 am,  Mayor Byron Brown joined GObike Buffalo and the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc. (BNMC) at a Bike to Work Day breakfast (Virginia & Ellicott Streets) to announce upcoming city plans and projects that aim to make Buffalo an even more bicycle friendly city.

Mayor Brown continues to honor his commitment of adding 10 miles of bike lanes a year in Buffalo, which will result in over 80 bike lanes in its network by the end of 2015.  Today he also announced that the city’s bicycle master plan is nearing completion and invited citizens to provide their input on the draft plan at the final public meeting which is scheduled for May 21st at 6 PM in the downtown Buffalo and Erie County Public Library’s Auditorium.

When asked why he endorses Better Bicycling in Buffalo, Mayor Brown commented that, “Making bicycling an integral part of life in Buffalo will not only benefit the city both financially and environmentally but will improve the health of our citizens.” The Mayor’s announcement supporting the completion of the bicycle master plan and developing an implementation strategy will ensure that the city’s complete streets policy continues to be the underlying principle so that everyone can travel safely throughout the entire city.

Justin Booth, Executive Director of GObike Buffalo stated, “Throughout Bike Month we have seen people across the city clearly demonstrate their desire for Buffalo to become bicycle friendly. From small group rides, bike to school day and the installation of 110 new bicycles racks – citizens and businesses alike are enjoying safe opportunities to ride more often.”

The Bike to Work Day breakfast was held at the corner of Virginia and Ellicott Street, showcasing the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus’ new bicycle storage facility. As one of the fastest growing employment centers in WNY and with a projected employee base of 17,000 by 2017, there is a need to ensure ample parking for patients and visitors, while creating sustainable and efficient access and mobility options for employees, partners and neighbors. The latest development, managed by GObike, is part of the strategy to decrease drive-alone trips and encourage my employees to bicycle.

“We are proud to have worked with GObike Buffalo for a number of years to support their work in improving infrastructure to make our campus and surrounding neighborhoods more bicycle and pedestrian friendly,” said Matthew K. Enstice, president and CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus, Inc.
