2nd Annual Buffalo Senior Lunch and Wellness Fair

May 12, 2016 - Mayor Byron W. Brown today sponsored the City of Buffalo’s 2nd Annual Senior Lunch and Wellness Fair at the Schiller Park Senior Citizen Center.  The free event provided an opportunity for senior to speak to dozens of local health associations about their services.

Seniors had the opportunity to participate in free health screenings, cooking and exercise demonstrations, and a wellness walk. A healthy were also provided, along with a healthy breakfast and snacks.

“This senior-focused health fair provides one-stop shopping for our older residents to make connections with more than 30 local healthcare organizations, offering the types of services they need. It’s also a great opportunity for our seniors to learn new ways to maintain their health through exercise and nutrition,” Mayor Brown said.

There are more than 70,000 senior citizens living in Buffalo, according to Douglas Ruffin, Director, City of Buffalo Division of Senior Services.

“And that number is growing, especially in our oldest age brackets as they are living longer. A one-stop event like this is so important because as more of our residents age out of driving, it’s so helpful to them to be able to make so many contacts in one setting,” Director Ruffin said.

The wellness event was sponsored by the City of Buffalo, United Healthcare, Centers Healthcare, Greater Buffalo United Accountable Healthcare Network, Dunkin’ Donuts, Subway, Lovejoy Councilmember Richard Fontana and the Schiller Park Senior Center.

Participating healthcare agencies, organizations, providers and businesses included: Aetna Health Connections, Alzheimer’s Association, American Diabetes Association, American Red Cross, Buffalo Hearing & Speech, Catholic Charities (Senior Day Program, LIFE and Physical Therapy}, Dr. William Holley, Century Wellness, Community Action Organization, Erie County Department of Health, Erie County Medical Center ( Advanced Care Planning, Outpatient Rehab and Trauma Injury Prevention), Erie County Senior Services, Massage/Navigator for NYS Affordable Healthcare Act, Meals on Wheels, Natural Wellness Solutions, Olmsted Center for Sight, Rite-Aid Pharmacy, Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP), Sheridan Surgical, University at Buffalo Dental, UNYTS, WNY Independent Living and Wellness Institute of Greater Buffalo.
