Cars Sharing Main Street

The City of Buffalo, in conjunction with Buffalo Place and NFTA, has been working on the Preliminary Engineering Design for the Cars on Main Street project. The City of Buffalo Department of Public Works is the lead agency and DiDonato Associates has been retained as the lead design firm and has been working on the project since September 2005.

DiDonato Associates has formed a Design Team including URS Corporation, Foit-Albert Associates, and Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architecture. All of these companies are either located on or near Main Street or have recent experience on a Main Street project.

The primary objective of the project is to reopen Main Street to two-way vehicular traffic from Scott Street to Goodell Street through the implementation of the preferred alternative identified in the Environmental Assessment (EA), the Share the Trackbed Alternative. The project goals are to stimulate economic development in downtown Buffalo, increase multi-modal access options and transit ridership, and improve the quality of life in downtown Buffalo. This will be achieved through higher visibility for retail shops, loading zones for shops and residential areas, and parking availability to allow easier access to buildings on Main Street.

The Preliminary Engineering Design will determine the design and location of the Metro Rail stations and the design of an attractive pedestrian-scale streetscape. This also will determine how traffic signals and curb parking spaces will be incorporated, and will coordinate developments on lower Main Street.

In an effort to keep the public informed of the status of the project, periodic Project Updates will be posted on this website.

An Advisory Committee has been assembled by the Mayor and is made up of Main Street representatives to work with the project designers on an ongoing basis.

Meetings have been held by the Advisory Committee and Design Team members to organize the design work and refine the scope of the project. Information from this meeting will be incorporated into the overall Scope Summary Memorandum (SSM) to identify the goals and objectives of the project.

The Design Team has been gathering and reviewing existing information, documents, and studies. A topographic survey has been completed of the entire project area and base mapping is being developed.

A survey/questionnaire was developed and given to property and key business owners on Main Street asking for detailed information to aid in the design effort.

The first public information meeting is tentatively scheduled for February 1, 2006 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the Market Arcade Film and Arts Center.
