City Calls For Rental Registration Verification
17,500 City Homeowners Asked to Provide Owner Occupancy Verification
Mayor Byron W. Brown today announced that 17,500 City of Buffalo homeowners will soon receive a formal request through the city’s Rental Registration Program for owner occupancy verification of their properties. The request forms will be distributed in tomorrow’s mail.
The city created the Rental Registration Program in 2004 to create and maintain a database of information in order to contact a landlord or their designated agent in the event of an emergency or enforce code compliance issues related to their property.
“The goal of this effort is to ensure that properties are properly identified as owner occupied, thereby preventing an absentee landlord situation,” said Mayor Brown. “This is another tactic we utilize to help maintain our city residents’ quality of life and ensure stable residential neighborhoods throughout the city.”
In addition to the owner occupancy verification effort, the city will deliver the annual rental registration forms to 30,000 homeowners in February 2009 for coming year’s fee of $10.00 for a single-family dwelling or $20.00 for a two-family dwelling.
Exemptions to these fees include verification of owner occupancy of a residential property, properties that provide medical or rehabilitation services and properties that include religious activities.
