Calls for Immediate Plan of Action to Protect Public Following Building Material Falling to Sidewalk on West Genesee Street Side of Statler Towers

Mayor Byron W. Brown today had a correspondence and attached material hand-delivered to the trustee of the Statler Towers following building material crashing to the sidewalk on the West Genesee Street side of the structure.

“As the attachments make clear, I wanted the Statler Towers trustee, Morris Horwitz, to understand that I take the health and safety of our citizens very seriously,” said Mayor Brown. “On the advice of my Commissioner of Economic Development, Permit and Inspection Services, James Comerford, I informed Mr. Horwitz that he is required within five days to engage a firm to conduct an inspection of the building’s exterior masonry.”

The city’s Department of Public Works, in consultation with the Department of Economic Development, Permit and Inspection Services and the Buffalo Fire Department, has closed off the West Genesee sidewalk immediately adjacent to the Statler Towers from Franklin Street to Niagara Square. The sidewalk will remain closed until further notice.
