Streetscape Improvements In The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus

$2.8 million Ellicott Street Streetscape Improvement project is nearing completion; new sidewalks, curb, milling and repaving, new signage, traffic signals and lighting will help further strengthen the infrastructure that is essential to the BNMC’s continued success
Buffalo –   Mayor Byron W. Brown and Congressman Brian Higgins provided an update today on the Ellicott Streetscape Improvement Project within the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC).  The $2.8 million project, the second phase of a $6.3 million total investment on Ellicott Street within the BNMC, is almost finished.
“The Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus continues to grow and evolve, adding new jobs to the city and creating a dynamic, cutting-edge medical life sciences campus in the heart of downtown,” said Mayor Brown, noting that development on the BNMC is helping to drive the $4.4 billion in new economic development activity that’s underway in Buffalo. “Our investment along Ellicott Street within the medical campus will help further strengthen the infrastructure that is essential to the BNMC’s continuing and future success, which is adding strength and vitality to the surrounding residential neighborhoods. I thank Congressman Higgins for his commitment to this project by helping us secure funding for these critical investments.”
“We know that when we invest in our infrastructure we not only create jobs but create a foundation on which new economic opportunities grow,” said Congressman Higgins.  “Investments along Main Street, our waterfront and throughout the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus are helping to drive Buffalo’s renaissance building new energy and excitement in Downtown Buffalo and throughout the City.  This Ellicott Street project helps strengthen the spine of the Medical Campus and support surrounding neighborhoods.”

Phase 1 of the Ellicott Park project along Ellicott Street within the BNMC was completed in fall 2012.  This $1.8 million plan included: a new linear park along a 20-foot set-back established alongside the east side of Ellicott Street.  The park project also included new sidewalks, planters, landscaping, benches and integrated lighting.

Phase 2 started last summer and is nearing completion.  This $2.8 million streetscape project includes:

  • New sidewalks with unique streetscape elements along Ellicott Street to create a pedestrian-friendly and secure campus setting for those who come for health care, education or work on and visit the BNMC.
  • The repaving of Ellicott Street by mill and overlay with placement of new curbs, new traffic signals and striping - with accomodations for bicyclists.
  • A new street lighting system was installed that was the first in the City to use LED street lights.

The city’s federal legislative delegation, which included Congressman Higgins, was able to secure federal funding from the Federal Transit Authority and through Federal Highway Administration.

Total Invested:

Construction Administration and Inspection (Phases 1&2):   $1,639,000
Construction: Phase 1 – Linear Park Project:  $1,875,000
Construction: Phase 2 – Streetscape Project: $2,824,000
 Total invested:       $6,338,000

Phase 2 of the Ellicott Streetscape Improvement project is expected to be completed in August.
