Celebrate Summer Reading

Mayor Byron Brown, with the help of local mascots, congratulated nearly 1,000 students on completing Mayor Brown’s 2014 summer reading challenge

October 4, 2014 – City of Buffalo students and their families converged on the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center on Saturday to take part in the 13th annual ‘Mayor Byron Brown’s Reading Rules! Kids Summer Reading Challenge’ awards ceremony. This year, nearly 1,000 students in grades K-12 completed Mayor Brown’s reading challenge, which is designed to keep students reading throughout the summer months.

“Every year I am impressed with our champion readers who productively and wisely use their summer to prepare for the next school year,” said Mayor Brown. “It is critical that students continue to learn even during the summer months; Reading Rules provides them with wonderful incentives to do just that.”

Participants of Mayor Brown’s summer reading challenge were required to read seven books for those in grades K-8 and four books for grades 9-12. Each completed book needed to be summarized and submitted to the Mayor’s office in exchange for an invitation to the prize ceremony.

This year, many students stood out for their excellence and determination to become champion readers, including a student who read 300 books and submitted a summary for each one.

Reading Rules began in 2001 when Mayor Brown served in the New York State Senate to address the literacy problem in New York State, particularly in the City of Buffalo and Western New York. Mayor Brown started the literacy effort to encourage schoolchildren to read books throughout the summer, and submit written summaries of each book they had read.

This year’s ceremony was again held at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, on Saturday October 4, 2014. All champion readers received a certificate of achievement, a mayor’s summer reading t-shirt and a book. A new component of the prize ceremony was the addition of mascots from the Buffalo Sabres, Buffalo Bisons, FC Soccer, Buffalo State College, Canisius College, Attendance Counts and PBS Kids.

A variety of special prizes were raffled off at the program’s awards ceremony, including educational scholarships, bicycles, Sony Playstation game systems, iPods, HD TVs, Educational Incentive packages and book bags.

This year’s sponsors were: The City of Buffalo, The Buffalo Zoo, The Buffalo Niagara Convention Center, Buffalo Water/Veolia Water, The Buffalo Museum of Science, The Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural Site, Desi’s Produce, Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Gardens, Albright Knox Art Gallery, AT&T, M&T Bank, Dollar General, Wal-Mart, National Fuel, Buffalo Metropolitan Federal Credit Union, General Mills, Buffalo Teacher’s Federation, Ad Pro Sports, Martin’s Fantasy Island and UPS.  Collaborative partners include: Buffalo Public Schools, Project Flight, Buffalo Read to Succeed, Buffalo & Erie County Libraries and The Buffalo Police Athletic League.
